Running With Scissors returns to the Shim Sham Club this summer with another original musical parody up its sleeve. This time, the upstart theatre troupe has its comic sights set on America’s number one export: pop music!

Written by Flynn De Marco, Dorian Rush, and other members of the company, POP TARTS takes as its inspiration the WB’s boy-band TV series Pop Stars, mixing in a dash of Valley of the Dolls and a smidge of The Picture of Dorian Gray to spice things up. The result is a hilarious, one-act send-up of America’s pop music machine that follows a rag-tag foursome (Flynn De Marco, Jim Meredith, Brian Peterson, Jason Toups) from their initial audition for the prefab boy-band, A La Mode, to multi-platinum superstardom. Before long, however, A La Mode’s magic begins to melt, doomed by a charmed portrait of the lead singer (De Marco) and his unquenchable desire to be “the one true pop star!”

POP TARTS also features the comic talents of Dorian Rush as the country-crossover sensation who ultimately foils De Marco’s plot; Jim Jeske as the group’s smarmy but lovable agent; Elizabeth Pearce and Veronica Oliver as a pair of quarrelsome pop princesses; Debbie Davis as the hard-edged, veteran diva; and Patrick Flynn as nearly everyone else. POP TARTS will also feature a series of guest stars in a very special cameo role.

POP TARTS runs Saturdays and Sundays from July 13 through August 4, 2002. Showtime is 8:00pm at the Shim Sham Club, 615 Toulouse Street, in the French Quarter. Tickets are $12-$15, sliding scale. For more information, please call 504 606 9903.
